By the early 1600s, Manchuria had occupied Chinese sovereignty and established the Ching Dynasty. While many nationalist uprisings still took place within the martial artist community, the new government soon enacted the Martial Arts Prohibition, banning martial arts practice altogether in order to gain control and order. Wind Fire (Sun Hong-Lei), a military officer surrendered from the previous dynasty, sees this as an opportunity to generate wealth for himself by helping to enforce new laws. Greedy, ruthless and immoral, Wind Fire destroys Northwest China, and its next goal is to attack the last frontier, Martial Village. Fu Qingzhu, a retired executioner from the previous dynasty, felt the need to stop this cruelty and to rescue Bowei Fort. He brought Wu Yuanyin and Han Zhiban from the village with him to Heaven Mountain to seek the help of Master Shadow-Glow, a hermit who mastered the sword and led a group of brilliant fencing disciples. Master Shadow-Glow agrees to help, and orders his four best disciples to leave. Together with Chu Zhaonan, Yang Yunchong, Mulong, and Xin Longzi, he formed the SEAL Sword and began their heroic journey. As they lead the whole village to a safer place, they begin to face mysterious confusion. Food and water were poisoned, and escape routes were marked with signs pointing the enemy towards them. They soon realized that there was a spy in disguise, and the SEAL Sword had to identify him before the Wind Fire army arrived. Between this narrow gap between life and death, the situation is further complicated by the flowering of love.
Fu Qingzhu, a retired executioner, felt the urge to stop the Wind Fire so he set about rescuing the Fighting Village. He brought with him two young villagers, Han Zhibang and Wu Yuanying, to Heaven Mountain to seek help from Master Shadow-Glow, a swordsman and sword forger. Shadow-Glow allowed its four pupils - Chu Zhaonan, Yang Yuncong, Xin Longzi and Mulang - to accompany the three on their quest. He also gave each of them a special sword which he forged. The seven of them called themselves the "Seven Swords." The Seven Swords returned to the Fighting Village in time and successfully defeated and repelled the Wind Fire army. In order to buy villagers time to prepare for evacuation, the Seven Swordsmen went to the Wind-Fire headquarters and caused a mess by setting their barn on fire and poisoning their horses. During the raid, Chu Zhaonan came across the Korean Wind-fire slave girl, Green Pearl, and took her as they fled.
As the villagers left the Fighting Village and made their way to the hills, strange things began to happen along the way. Their food and water supplies were poisoned and their tracks marked with points pointing to the enemy. The Seven Swordsmen realized there was a spy among them and they agreed to get rid of him before Wind-Fire caught up. Green Pearl immediately became a suspect because she did not speak their language. The situation was further complicated by the romantic relationship between Chu Zhaonan and Green Pearl. At one point, Green Pearl and Chu fell into a trap set up by Fire-Wind. Chu used his sword to release the Green Pearl from the net thrown by the Wind Fire army but lost its weapon. While Chu was captured by the enemy, Green Pearl escaped and conveyed his message that Chu had been captured by the other swordsmen before succumbing to their injuries.
The other six swordsmen went to the Wind-Fire headquarters and engaged him in a battle to save Chu Zhaonan. During the Seven Swords 'absence, the spy, Qiu Dongluo, set fire to the cave entrance to alert the enemy to the villagers' location. He reveals his identity and begins to systematically kill unconscious villagers. He was found by the daughter of the village chief, Liu Yufang, who eventually killed him by accident. However, she was so traumatized by the experience that it became hysterical. Meanwhile, the Seven Swordsmen defeated and killed the Wind-Fire, and forced his troops into temporary retreat. The swordsman returned to the hideout, only to find that all the villagers had been killed, except Liu Yufang and the children. Han Zhibang silenced Liu and decided to stay behind and protect the survivors. Seven Swords realized that the only way to save the wulin was to persuade the Qing emperor to lift the martial arts ban. Liu tells Han that he can take care of the survivors on his own so Han rushes after the other swordsmen as they travel towards the capital.
