The story takes place before Tang Sanjang gets his apprenticeship and starts his journey to the West.
A riverside village terrified by a mysterious aquatic creature. A Taoist priest killed a giant manta ray and claimed it was a demon. Sanjang, a self-proclaimed monster hunter, seems to be warning villagers that the animal is not a real monster. The villagers ignore him and tie him up in the priest's wrath. The real monster reappears and kills many villagers. Sanjang gave up and with the survivors, the creature was able to be saved, which turned into a human. Sanjang then opened the children's songbook and began to sing to the devil. Frightened, the monster attacks Sanjang. He captures another monster hunter, Duane, and turns the monster into a puppet. Sanjang tells Duan that his master has taught him a more humane approach and that he uses nursery rhymes to attract Satan's good, a tactic that Duan envies. Disappointed, Sanjang meets his master and laments his lack of power over more aggressive monster hunters. His guru repeated his humanistic philosophy and sent Sanjang to find "enlightenment" again.
The husband and wife enter an empty restaurant but the cook reveals that he is a pig monster and kills them. Sanjang came to the same restaurant, this time he seemed full of people. Sanjang saw the illusion and recognized the bodies of their resurrected prey, as well as nine monster tooth racks. Duan destroys all the corpses by barking at the restaurant, and the pig attacks the monster. The monster grabs his magic bag and turns it into a doll, but the monster gets out of the bag and turns into a giant pig, destroying the building. Sanjang and Duan followed. Later, Duan became fascinated with his selfless ideals and became very interested in Sanjang. She expresses her feelings, but Sanjang escapes, not wanting to deal with romantic love in search of Nirvana.
Master Sanjang advised him to subdue the demon (conquered by Buddha) of the monkey king San Ukong, the pig. That night, he was captured by gangs who also subdued Duan. It was later revealed that it was a conspiracy by Duan to seduce Sanjang to have sex with him. After Sanjang rejects him again, he is taken prisoner. The pig monster reappears and injures Duane but is tortured by a rival trio of monster hunters. Duan considers Sanjang's concern for his injury to be a romantic attraction. After Sanjang again rejected his progress, he destroyed his nursery rhyme book and left.
After a few days of traveling, Sanjang finds a cave at the bottom of the lotus garden, where the monkey king was imprisoned for 500 years. The monkey king instructed Sanjang to use dancers to attract monsters. Duane gets up and volunteers to dance. When the pig monster appears, the monkey king easily insults him, leaving Duane to turn him into a puppet. Duan then gave Sanjang a stuffed fish and pork and offered him his gold ring weapon as an engagement band, but he refused again. He returned the rearranged book of his nursery rhymes, although it was random because he was illiterate.
The monkey king deceived Sanjang to break the seal of his prison and get him out of the cave. Sanjang began to pray to the Buddha, and the angry monkey king tore the hair off his head. Three monster hunters are seen catching the monkey king but he easily kills them. Duan returns and rescues Sanjang, but the Monkey King injures him. Sanjang admits that he loves her, and the monkey king begins to steam her body. Looking at the children's book again, Sanjang realized that Duan had inadvertently rearranged the words in his book into Buddhist formulas. Sanjang summoned the Buddha, who had defeated the king monkey with the palm of his hand. Sanjang then placed Duan's gold ring on Monkey King, which he turned into a limited head band.
