Masami Konuma (Mugi Kadowaki) has not left her home for 5 years. He is interested in Otaku things like reading manga and drawing anime. Her father Isuke (Makita Sports) is worried about her and has given her a job that doesn't require too much interaction with other people. His job is to debug games in a game company. He also helps with illustrations directed by Ryotaro Yabe (Takahiro Miura). In the end, his paintings were noticed and dedicated to depicting the characters. Meanwhile, Masami Konuma is making feelings towards Ryotaro Yab.
Masaya Ozaki is a knowledgeable screenwriter. Her first writing career began in 1995. However, in 2010 a director added his strengths. His first work as a writer / director was "Randebû!". His "sketchbook" is a feature of both. Its impressive setting is probably why this film is so well written and has such great pace.
Mami Konuma, in her twenties, works in a factory, inexperienced, as if living in her own world, and - the biggest sign of social disability - she loves manga. After quitting his factory job, his anxious father offered him a job as a video game tester. One day, while eating on the stairs, he heard Yabe, who was part of the production team, and had to review the pictures. Without thinking too much, he becomes a secret revision rescue for the young man (basically he and Batman are the same when it comes to saving people). Steps outside of his comfort zone will widen his horizons, free him from some old wounds and help him become stronger.
Mami is a sticky character, backed by actress Mugi Kadowaki. Others see it as a cover for 'reuniting society.' But the story suggests a somewhat more complex one. She’s shy, doesn’t really know how to tie but she tries, and she doesn’t have too much confidence (which comes with harsh explanations among non-existent mothers). Mami considers herself ‘calm and defeated’ (her words, not mine). And when she meets people who stop treating her that way and embraces her creative mind, her life can be better exposed.
"His Sketchbook" is interesting because it combines an indie mood (natural light, minimal gloss), but also a storytelling aspect (for example, with finishing) and a manga effect (an interactive way to present pictures). This last point allows for a very clever and fun way to present pictures, flashbacks, etc. However, the weakness of the manga-esque aspect of this film is the sometimes exaggerated performance of the supporting characters.
His "sketchbook" is visually appealing, entertaining, and though somewhat stereotypical, it makes you feel calm, or what I would call a hot-chocolate-feeling-a-comfortable-blanket.
