The film mainly follows the infamous Battle of Myeongryang in 1597 during the Japanese invasion of Korea (1592-1598), in which the iconic admiral Joseon Yi Sun-sin managed to destroy a total of 31 of 133 Japanese warships with only 13 ships left under his. order.
At the start of the battle at their base in Haenam, the Japanese invaders under Tลdล Takatora were confident that their planned expedition to Hansong to capture King Seonjo would be successful. However, they remained secretive about the news that Joseon's largest admiral, Yi Sun-sin, had returned to his previous command after the disaster at Chilcheollyang, which had reduced the Korean navy to just a dozen ready-made ships for battles. To ensure the success of the campaign, Hideyoshi sent one of his best naval warriors to Joseon, Kurushima Michifusa, a Clan Murakami Marine commander who was skilled in naval combat but who enjoyed a shaky reputation as a pirate. A Japanese Left Army admiral, Wakizaka, encounters Kurushima and his lieutenant, Kimura for the first time, as he finishes the remains of a group of Joseon troops. He was distrust of Kurushima in particular and drew his sword several times, especially after the latter insulted him by humiliating his defeat on Hansan Island. Later, Kurushima and Haru, the sniper, drink ore as Kurushima outlines his personal anger against Yi Sun-sin, noting that his brother Michiyuki had been killed by Yi Sun-sin earlier in the war.
Meanwhile, Yi Sun-sin was facing increasing despair among his officers and soldiers. Faced with a far larger enemy force and no reasonable prospect of success in the inevitable confrontation with even one turtle remaining, many considered the battle a loss before it even started. Despite his depressing attitude, Yi is desperate to maintain morale among his men and is desperate to find a solution to his problem. However, the breaking point appears to have been reached when General Bae Seol, the defender of Chilcheollyang, set fire to the turtle ship and had his men try to kill Yi. While Yi escapes and Bae is killed for his act of betrayal, the ship is lost, which increases trust among the Japanese and further depresses Yi's troops. In search of answers, Yi travels to the Myeongnyang Strait, an area known for its strong and dangerous currents, which the Japanese wanted to cross on their way to Hansong. Later, he tells his son Hoe that in order to win the battle he must turn the fear that paralyzes his men into courage.
When the tide turned and formed a whirlpool in the center of the channel, thus strengthening Yi's defensive position, Kurushima ordered an outright attack with the rest of his ships. Despite the efforts of Haru and a ship laden with a cargo of black powder, the Koreans' renewed bravery persists, despite the great sacrifices made. Kurushima is appalled by Todo, who only laughs at Kat's suggestion to strengthen her. Realizing that he was now alone, Kurushima boarded the flagship Korean ship but was executed by Yi himself after taking several shots from Korean shooters, and had his head hanged from the tail end of the ship.
When Yi's own ship was caught in a whirlpool, civil navy officials and local fishermen bravely dragged the ship back to safety. Joining the rest of the fleet, Yi led a counter-attack that dealt a tremendous blow to Japanese troops, forced them to retreat, and won the Koreans victorious. The film ends with memories of Japan's first encounter with a turtle ship in 1592.
